Pink Floyd founder Syd Barrett’s guitar will be auctioned off to raise funds a national charity and a Cambridgeshire hospice.
The singer-songwriter left the band in 1968, as they were about to achieve global recognition, and lived in his mum’s basement in Hills Road, Cambridge.
Barrett recorded two solo albums but suffered from mental deterioration, which was blamed on his drug use, eventually becoming a recluse, He died of pancreatic cancer in 2006 at the age of 60.
His nephew Mark Barrett, aged 57, is now selling the 12-string Yamaha acoustic guitar with proceeds to be split evenly between mental health charity Mind and the Arthur Rank Hospice in Shelford Bottom.
Syd Barrett mentioned the guitar in a 1971 interview with Rolling Stone magazine.“It’s my new 12-string guitar,” said the musician, born Roger Keith Barrett. “I’m just getting used to it. “I polished it yesterday.”
Mark Barrett said the guitar was stored with his father, Alan Barrett – Syd’s brother – after the Hills Road house was sold in 1974.He said his uncle “never collected the guitar” and his father “continued to store it over three subsequent house moves, eventually offering it to me” after Syd’s death.
“I finally collected it from my father’s house in November of 2020, shortly before he died,” he said. “Unfortunately, I never got to know my uncle Roger, though I would have loved to, but he was a recluse in his later years.”
The guitar has a serial number of 1090448 with a date code for October 21 1969.
Also up for auction at Cheffins in Cambridge is what is believed to be the last artwork created by Syd Barrett.
The watercolour and pencil drawing is titled Still Life With Lemons And Green Bottles, and is initialled and dated “RB Jan – 06”. Drawn just months before his death, it was discovered at his home in Margaret’s Square, Cambridge, where he lived for the last three decades of his life.
It first went under the hammer at Cheffins as part of the sale of the contents of his home in 2006, and is now being sold by a private collector with a pre-sale estimate of £4,000 to £6,000.
Martin Millard, director at Cheffins, said: “Syd Barrett still has a cult-like status as one of the greatest icons in the world of music. Syd’s Pink Floyd years were turbulent, marred by drug addiction and struggles with his mental health; however, when he retired to Cambridge, he became a recluse. His lack of public presence in his later years only went to add to the intrigue which still surrounds him.“It therefore seems incredibly fitting that Mark Barrett has chosen to support both Mind and the Arthur Rank Hospice with the proceeds of the sale.”
He said the lots are “sure to be of keen interest to his global army of superfans”, adding that Barrett “frequently destroyed any artworks he made once they were finished” so the painting is “a significant item”.
Also part of the auction are a garden table and four chairs that were home-made by Barrett; a Cambridgeshire High School for Boys photograph from 1959, featuring Barrett, Roger Waters and Storm Thorgerson; and with a Cantabrigian programme for She Stoops To Conquer from 1961, featuring Barrett as Tom Twist.
The auction will take place on Thursday October 28.
The Pink Floyd co-founder, 78, has married girlfriend Kamilah Chavis. “I’m so happy, finally a keeper,” he wrote alongside a series of photos of the happy couple celebrating their wedding day.
In the sweet pictures, Waters and his bride smile and share a kiss while wearing a suit and white dress, respectively. In one photo, they pose outside on a bridge with their dog Sweet Georgia Brown, and in another, they laugh while cutting into a cake in their kitchen.
“A very happy man,” he captioned a solo shot, while on another, he wrote, “A very beautiful bride.”
This is the fifth marriage for Waters, who most recently split from actress and director Laurie Durning in 2015 after three years of marriage.
The “Wish You Were Here” singer opened up about his romance with Chavis in a 2018 interview with the Argentinian outlet Infobae, and said at the time that they were not married, but had been together for several years.
“Love is good, obviously. It requires maturing. If you have real love, it will surely last a long time. Because love is about giving, not receiving,” he told the outlet.

An All-Star Gathering Of Rock Legends Including GRAHAM BONNET, ARTHUR BROWN, VINNIE MOORE, DAVID J, JAMES LABRIE, and others Perform PINK FLOYD’s 1977 Epic ANIMALS In Its Entirety!
Album features performances by Al Di Meola, Albert Lee, Rick Wakeman, Martin Barre, Carmine Appice, Jordan Rudess, Billy Cobham, Jan Akkerman, and more!
Los Angeles, CA – Following the wildly successful Still Wish You Were Here project released earlier this year, another gathering of classic, prog and art rock superstars have come together to recreate and reimagine Pink Floyd’s ambitious 1977 concept album, Animals! Fusing the white-hot guitar work of Floyd guitarist David Gilmour with the stone-cold cynicism of Roger Water’s lyrics, Animals is widely hailed by die-hard Floyd fans as one of the group’s most highly conceptual and uncompromising albums of their career, and certainly set the template for the commercial breakthrough that would come two years later with 1979’s The Wall.
Now, some of the most veteran players and singers on the planet including jazz-rock guitar legend Al Di Meola, psych-rock godfather Arthur Brown, drum master Billy Cobham, UFO’s Vinnie Moore, Bauhaus’s David J, Dream Theater’s James LaBrie, and so many more come to give their unique spins to this magnum opus. Each track of this groundbreaking work has been completely reimagined with modern production flourishes and tasteful musical additions while staying true to the original album’s heady and subtly complex compositions. Just listen to the new version of “Dogs,” a superb 17-minute suite sung by Rainbow’s Graham Bonnet with Vinnie Moore on guitar, Utopia’s Kasim Sulton on bass, Dream Theater’s Jordan Rudess on keyboards, and King Crimson drummer Pat Mastelotto.
Animals Reimagined – A Tribute To Pink Floyd is set for release on November 19 on both CD and digital with a vinyl version coming in 2022. The CD version comes in a deluxe 6-panel digipak with artwork created by the most successful digital artist working today, Mike “Beeple” Winkelmann, with cover art designed by James McCarthy. Look for the NFT charity auction of the front cover image later this year!

50 years ago to this date saw the filming and cinematic release of Pink Floyd: Live at Pompeii. Created as a documentary film directed by Adrian Maben and featuring Pink Floyd performing at the ancient Roman amphitheatre in Pompeii, Italy. The documentary sees the band performing a typical live set from the era between the release of Meddle and The Darkside of the moon, there is no audience beyond the basic film crew.
The main footage in and around the amphitheatre was filmed over four days in October 1971, using the band’s regular touring equipment, including a mobile 8-track recorder from Paris (before being bumped up to 16-track in post-production). Additional footage filmed in a Paris television studio the following December was added for the original 1972 release. The film was then re-released in 1974 with additional studio material of the band working on The Dark Side of the Moon, and interviews at Abbey Road Studios.
The film has subsequently been released on video numerous times, and in 2002, a Director’s cut DVD appeared which combined the original footage from 1971 with more contemporary shots of space and the area around Pompeii, assembled by Maben. A number of bands have taken inspiration from the film in creating their own videos, or filming concerts without an audience.
One of the most shared and taled about images from the filmis the amount of “WEM” speaker cabinets that were used with some havingPink Floyd London spray painted on the back of them, something of which David Gilmour still uses live to thisday.
