Night five at MSG, and sadly, the final night of the Luck and Strange tour. Reports were the band were really cooking last night! “A Great Day For Freedom” remained in the set after being dropped on the third night (November 6th). Below are some comments from last night’s show via our forum:
“Last night was fantastic! The solos in Scattered and Comfortably Numb were on fire. (Maybe that’s why someone forgot the lighting cue on the mirror ball for CN? Turned them on just at the very end.) Aside from that, Marc Brickman turned the lighting up to 12. David’s playing seemed a bit sharper overall than the shows we saw in London. Although he seemed to try something at the end of Sorrow that never quite came out of the guitar.
The MSG crowd was noisier than RAH, as expected, but generally respectful during songs and very appreciative of DG and the band.
My only real issue was our seats – we were in Sec H on the floor by the mix. In the past when I’ve bought seats in that area they’ve been on risers with a good view. Last night they were flat on the floor. Lesson learned — the difference between Sec H and Sec 3 seems to be the risers.
Regardless, it was a great show and glad to have been there. If that’s the last one, then I’m content.
Some general observations about shows we saw on this tour:
David seemed to be having a lot of fun. Perhaps having more of his family involved made a difference.
Scattered is *stunning* live.
The arrangement for Great Day for Freedom injected some new life into a song that didn’t interest me much before.
I wish Sorrow wasn’t the first song right after the intermission. So many people straggling back to their seats was distracting – especially last night.
David shared more of the music duties this time around, even with 1 less guitarist than the last tour. Ben W handled a number of parts that I think David would have played in the past. Interesting to see, and Ben did a wonderful job playing and singing.
Nice to see Louise Marshall on piano, too. Those pieces were handled by keyboardists in the past.
Rob Gentry was far more prominent than Greg P (in my opinion). Aside from a few parts, Greg seemed to fade into the background both on vocals and keys. Kinda forgot he was hiding behind the head sitting in front of me.
As in the past, the tour ends just as the band seems to really hit their stride. Glad to see them playing so well as a group.
It was a lot of fun seeing friends before the shows like the old days. The meetups are a wonderful part of the experience even if they’re smaller these days and we missed folks on other nights.
Hoping for more shows in the future — after the finances recover.” – thanks to mooncusser
