After a lengthy eight-year wait, David Gilmour returns! Tonight, the opening rehearsal performance for David’s upcoming Luck and Strange tour takes place. A lucky audience of 1,500 at the Brighton Centre in the UK will experience a special preview of David’s forthcoming live performances in Rome, London, Los Angeles, and New York. “A quick reflection on last night.
I’ve been fortunate enough to see David Gilmour 5 times in concert including when Bowie showed up and all at The RAH and so I know just how good he can be. I don’t know why, but I was nervous before hand, with DG being almost 80 and seeing some of the recent performances, although good, not being up to scratch. I needed not to of worried though as last night was a privilege.
Guy Pratt introduced the evening politely asking people to live in the moment and not record things and if they do to switch flashes off.
We were say some way from the stage to the left as you look towards, with the sound desk taking up the standing area entirely. They started with 5am and Black Cat both lovely and performed as if he’d never played live for 10 years, beautiful all the same.
He got better, much better as the night went on. Luck and Strange next and this was great and it was clear the band were a talented bunch and dare I say better than the previous two on his tours.
We had Breathe, Time, The outstanding Between Two Points where Romany’s performance was outstanding as was Gilmour end guitar solo, but we knew it would be anyway.
Sorrow was outstanding, opening the second set as was Fat Old Sun – I love this song. In Any Tongue really kicked on and the other guitarist really filled in the chorus well on this both vocally and playing. He looked awkward on stage but performed well, he’ll grow into the role.
Lovely section with Romany and the other backing singers doing Gig In The Sky and A Boat Lies Waiting, really nice!!
A Great Day For Freedom had a lovely harmony section whilst David tore into his solo amongst other highlights and CN ended the night with a nice long solo at the end.
A joy to be at the gig, for a first night performance it was 8/9 out of 10. I enjoyed every minute of it and was in awe as to how he does this at his age. The opening to Coming Back To Life I thought when it started was a wrong choice, nope, his voice was marvelous, I needn’t of worried.
A standing ovation, £30 well spent and my eldest got to see him live ❤️
Fantastic night what’s not to like when you get lasers, lights, David Gilmour and 1st night nerves from all.”
